William Shakespeare va néixer a Stratford-upon-Avon (Anglaterra) l’abril de 1564 (es desconeix la data exacta) i hi va morir el 23 d’abril de 1616. Lluís Gavaldà recorda el dramaturg, poeta i actor anglès fent un recorregut per 14 cançons inspirades en obres com Romeu i Julieta o Hamlet.
1. Dire Straits – Romeo and Juliet

4. Billy Bragg – The Milkman of Human Kindness
“Yet do I fear thy nature,
it is too full o’ th’ milk of human kindness
to catch the nearest way,” diu Lady Macbeth en un moment de debilitat.
Billy Bragg li contesta amb humor i tendresa, com de costum.
5. The Smiths – Cemetry Gates
Una trobada entre amants al cementiri. Quan un cita Ricard III fent veure que la frase és seva, el bo de Morrissey diu haver-ho llegit més de cent vegades.

6. Elton John – The King Must Die
Elton John (o Bernie Taupin, que és qui li fa les lletres) demostra el seu amor per Shakespeare citant frases de Juli Cesar i Hamlet per dibuixar les trampes del poder.

7. Elvis Costello – Miss Macbeth
Costello retrata amb ulls misericordiosos els remordiments de Lady Macbeth un cop aconseguit el propòsit d’arribar al regnat.

possessed, Miss Macbeth?”
8. Bob Dylan – Desolation Row
Malgrat que l’argument de la cançó s’escampa més enllà del món shakesperià, aquest punt àlgid de la carrera de Dylan està salpebrat de referències als seus personatges més coneguts.

Romeo i Julieta o la constatació que, fins i tot després de la mort, l’amor regna.

Sting s’apropia del Sonet 130 de Shakespeare per explicar la relació entre la lluna i els ulls de la seva estimada.

14. Natalie Merchant – Ophelia
La veu més lluminosa de l’indie americà ens regala un reguitzell d’Ophelies, totes amb una voluntat de rebel·lar-se contra el seu destí.
