El músic nord-americà Gregg Allman va néixer a Nashville el 8 de desembre del 1947 i va morir a Savanna, Georgia, el 27 de maig del 2017. Amb el seu germà Duane va formar el 1969 The Allman Brothers Band, un grup pioner del rock del sud dels Estats Units. Duane va morir el 1971 d’un accident de moto, però el grup es va mantenir actiu durant quatre dècades més, fins al 2014. The Allman Brothers Band va ser seleccionada per la revista The Rolling Stones com una de les millors de tots els temps. Gregg Allman deia que la cançó de què estava més orgulllós era aquesta Midnight Rider.
