L’Associació d’Editors en Llengua Catalana, davant dels fets dels darrers dies, ha volgut aprofitar el marc de la Fira del Llibre de Frankfurt per condemnar la violència i reivindicar el valor de la paraula. I ho ha fet llegint-hi aquest manifest escrit en català, alemany i anglès.

Manifest sobre la situació a Catalunya
La diversitat cultural, lingüística i nacional és inherent a la condició humana. La diversitat comporta diferències i aquesta és justament la riquesa d’una societat plural. Però, quan les diferències deriven en conflicte s’han de resoldre de manera pacífica, per mitjà del diàleg, que és l’instrument més poderós per a l’entesa i la concòrdia.
Des del segle VIII, el poble català ha forjat una identitat pròpia, basada en una llengua, una cultura, unes institucions i unes lleis. El 1714, com a conseqüència de la Guerra de Successió, Catalunya va perdre l’autonomia política i jurídica. Des de llavors, l’encaix de Catalunya en el projecte espanyol ha estat motiu de debat constant. La dictadura de Franco, una transició democràtica massa complexa, l’aprovació de l’Estatut de 2006 severament mutilat pel Tribunal Constitucional i els bloqueigs econòmics i polítics de les últimes dècades han agreujat aquesta situació.
L’absència de resposta del govern de l’Estat espanyol als anhels legítims de Catalunya d’expressar-se en un referèndum pactat va donar lloc als fets del passat 1 d’octubre. El poble català va defensar el seu dret a vot de forma pacífica i democràtica i la resposta de la policia espanyola va ser altament repressiva i violenta, amb el resultat de més de 800 persones ferides.
L’Associació d’Editors en Llengua Catalana, que representa 96 editorials, vol manifestar el rebuig més enèrgic a qualsevol forma de violència i vol expressar, així mateix, la seva confiança en la fortalesa de la paraula com a única eina per a resoldre els conflictes. Si ens dediquem a l’ofici d’editar és, en bona mesura, perquè compartim aquesta convicció en la capacitat d’actuar des de la no-violència, amb arguments i idees, mai amb cops ni armes. I esperem que els companys del món editorial, arreu del món, ens facin costat en aquesta reivindicació tan nostra i tan universal alhora. Perquè com va escriure el poeta Carles Riba, “no hi ha inútil cap esperit si creix lliure en la seva virtut”.

Die kulturelle, sprachliche und nationale Vielfalt wohnt dem menschlichen Wesen inne. Die Vielfalt bringt Unterschiede mit sich, und diese machen genau den Reichtum einer pluralistischen Gesellschaft aus. Führen die Unterschiede jedoch zu Konflikten, dann müssen sie auf friedliche Weise überwunden werden, und zwar mittels des Dialogs, des mächtigsten Instruments für die Verständigung und die Eintracht, über das wir verfügen.
Seit dem 8. Jahrhundert hat das katalanische Volk eine eigene, auf einer Sprache, einer Kultur, Institutionen und einer Gesetzgebung basierende Identität entwickelt. Im Jahr 1714 jedoch verlor Katalonien infolge des Spanischen Erbfolgekrieges seine politische und juristische Autonomie. Seitdem ist die Integration Kataloniens in das spanische Projekt ein dauerndes Diskussionsthema gewesen. Diese Situation hat sich durch die Franco-Diktatur, einen zu komplexen Übergang zur Demokratie, die Verabschiedung des vom spanischen Verfassungsgericht schwer verstümmelten katalanischen Statuts von 2006 und die ökonomischen und politischen Blockaden der letzten Jahrzehnte zugespitzt.
Die Weigerung der Regierung des spanischen Staates, dem legitimen Verlangen Kataloniens, seine Stimme in einem vereinbarten Referendum zum Ausdruck zu bringen, zu entsprechen, führte zu den Ereignissen des vergangenen 1. Oktobers. Das katalanische Volk verteidigte sein Stimmrecht in friedlicher und demokratischer Weise, worauf die spanische Polizei – mit einer Bilanz von über 800 Verletzten – ausgesprochen repressiv und gewalttätig reagierte.
Der Associació d’Editors en Llengua Catalana, der 96 Verlage repräsentiert, lehnt jede Form von Gewalt energisch ab und vertraut auf die Kraft des Wortes als einziges Werkzeug zur Konfliktlösung. Wenn wir uns dem Verlagswesen widmen, dann tun wir das im erheblichen Maße auch deshalb, weil wir die Überzeugung von der Effizienz des gewaltlosen Handelns teilen; mit Argumenten und Ideen, nie jedoch mit Schlägen und Waffen. Wir hoffen, dass uns unsere Kollegen und Kolleginnen in der internationalen Verlagswelt bei dieser uns so eigenen und doch so universellen Forderung zur Seite stehen werden. Denn, wie bereits der Dichter Carles Riba sagte:”Es gibt keinen unnützen Geist, wenn er frei in seiner Tugend wächst“.
Manifesto on the situation in Catalonia
Cultural, linguistic and national diversity is inherent to the human condition. Diversity results in differences and it is precisely this that is the wealth of a plural society. However, when differences lead to conflict, they have to be resolved in a peaceful way through dialogue, the most powerful tool we have to achieve understanding and harmony.
Ever since the 8th century, the people of Catalonia have forged an identity of their own based on their language, culture, institutions and laws. In 1714, as a consequence of the War of the Spanish Succession, Catalonia lost its political and legal autonomy. Since then, Catalonia’s place in the Spanish project has been the subject of constant debate. Franco’s dictatorship, an overly complex transition to democracy, the approval of the 2006 Catalan Statute of Self-government that was severely mutilated by the Constitutional Court and the economic and political obstructions of recent decades have exacerbated this situation.
The lack of a response from the Spanish government to the legitimate longings of Catalonia to express itself in an agreed referendum gave rise to the events of 1 October. The Catalan people defended their right to vote in a peaceful and democratic manner, and the reaction of the Spanish police was extremely repressive and violent, leaving more than 800 people injured.
The Associació d’Editors en Llengua Catalana, which represents 96 publishing houses, wishes to express its outright rejection of any form of violence and, furthermore, to declare its trust in the strength of the word as the sole tool for resolving conflicts. If we devote ourselves to the task of publishing, it is in large measure because we share this belief in the ability to take action through non-violence, using arguments and ideas, never blows and weapons. We hope that our colleagues in the publishing world around the globe will join us in making this assertion that is both ours and so universal. For as the poet Carles Riba wrote, “there is no useless spirit if it grows free in its virtue”.
