Robert Redford va néixer a Califòrnia el 18 d’agost de 1936. L’actor, director i productor –que, a punt de fer 82 anys, ha anunciat que es retira de la interpretació– té també una altra faceta: la d’activista medi ambiental. Escoltem i llegim el discurs que va fer a les Nacions Unides el 29 de juny del 2015. Va parlar clar, advertint que cal canviar el rumb del món abans que se’ns escapi totalment de les mans.
Gràcies, senyor president, secretari general, ministres, senyores i senyors, i voldria afegir: conciutadans.
Estic aquí com a defensor del medi ambient, però també com a pare, avi i ciutadà preocupat. Sóc un dels bilions de persones del món a qui li urgeix la necessitat d’actuar ara contra el canvi climàtic. Sóc actor, em sap greu. Sóc actor per ofici i activista per naturalesa. Sempre he cregut que hem de trobar un equilibri entre el que produïm per sobreviure i el que preservem per sobreviure.
La vostra missió és tan simple com descoratjadora: salvar el món abans que sigui massa tard. El meu compromís amb el canvi climàtic va començar fa més de quaranta anys, però la urgència que vaig sentir aleshores només ha fet que créixer. Una de les meves iniciatives va ser reunir alcaldes de tot el món, propers a les persones, a Sundance per parlar sobre l’amenaça del medi ambient. I quan les nacions s’uneixin aquest any a París per parlar sobre el canvi climàtic, també hi aniran aquests alcaldes, i líders financers i cívics. Estaran preparats per comprometre’s i anar a l’acció. El futur del nostre planeta penja d’un fil.
I la necessitat d’actuar no pot ser més clara. Avui en dia ja no podem al·legar ignorància com a excusa de la nostra falta d’acció, perquè la ciència ens diu que el canvi climàtic és real i és el resultat de l’activitat humana. Tal i com diu el papa Francesc d’una forma ben eloqüent, el canvi climàtic és un imperatiu moral que va més enllà de la política.
Podem veure’n els resultats al nostre voltant: des de les sequeres i la fam d’Àfrica fins a les onades de calor al sud d’Àsia, els incendis forestals a Amèrica del Nord, huracans devastadors, tornados, inundacions catastròfiques com la que hi va haver a Nova York. L’onada de calor a Índia i Pakistan ja s’ha endut més de 2.300 vides, convertint-se en una de les més letals de la història. Per tant, mirem on mirem, el clima en l’era actual sembla que s’hagi extingit. Els anys del segle XXI s’han registrat com els més càlids. I a mesura que pugen les temperatures, també augmenta la inestabilitat global, la pobresa i els conflictes.
Els millors científics del món diuen que ja hem utilitzat més de la meitat del carboni que ens queda. Ara, un augment de dos graus de temperatura és tot el que separa el nostre planeta de ser menys habitable. Aquesta diferència és poc perceptible per a la pell humana, però dos graus és tot el que fa falta per convertir un camp cultivable en un desert. I eliminaria un terç de l’aigua dolça de la superfície de cara al 2100. La nostra oportunitat de fer alguna cosa és petita i el marge entre l’èxit i el fracàs és desafortunadament prim.
El temps de prendre decisions a mitges i negar el canvi climàtic ja ha acabat. Si no és que ràpidament deixem de costat els combustibles sòlids, destruirem l’aire que respirem, l’aigua que bevem, la salut dels nostres fills, dels nostres néts i de les futures generacions. I si evitem la pitjor part de les conseqüències, llavors hem d’actuar audaçment, i de pressa, perquè tots som responsables d’aquesta crisi.
Ara mateix, ciutadans, comunitats, corporacions i països d’arreu del món plantaran cara al repte. Això són bones notícies. Més de cinc-centes ciutats han pres la decisió de crear llocs de treball, millorar la qualitat de vida, i reduir les emissions invertint en energia neta. L’any passat, els Estats Units i la Xina, dos dels emissors més grans de gasos que provoquen l’efecte hivernacle, van acordar reduccions històriques d’emissions de carboni. Cap país pot resoldre aquesta crisi tot sol. Tots ens hi hem d’involucrar més. Ha de ser un moviment que inclogui totes les nacions del món, perquè el canvi climàtic afecta cada nació del món. Aquest desembre el món s’ha d’unir amb un objectiu comú. Perquè mireu, aquest és el nostre únic planeta, la nostra única font de vida. Aquesta pot ser la nostra última oportunitat.
Els recursos del nostre planeta són limitats, però no hi ha límits a la imaginació humana i a la nostra capacitat de solucionar els problemes més grans. Només actuant ara i junts, units per un acord global, podem complir la promesa que les Nacions Unides van fer fa anys, la seva promesa fundacional. I només actuant ara i junts podrem aconseguir els resultats que necessitem amb el temps que ens queda. I només actuant ara i junts podrem inclinar la balança i canviar el curs de la història.
193 països es reuniran a París aquest desembre. Els ciutadans del món ho estaran veient. I els mirarem a vostès per assumir el lideratge a l’hora de combatre el canvi climàtic. Espero que assumeixin aquest paper amb coratge i convicció.

Thank you. Thank you, Mr. President, Mr. Secretary General, Ministers, ladies and gentlemen, and I’d like to add, fellow citizens. I’m here today as an environmental advocate, but also a father, grandfather and a concerned citizen. One of billions around the world, who are urging you to take action now on climate change. I’m an actor, I’m sorry about that. I’m an actor by trade. I’m an actor by trade, but I’m an activist by nature. Somebody who has always believed that we must find the balance between what we develop for our survival and what we preserve for our survival.
Your mission is as simple as it is daunting. To save the world before it’s too late. Now, my own engagement on climate change began more than 40 years ago. But the urgency that I felt then, has only grown stronger. And along the way, one of my initiatives was to bring mayors from around the world, who are closest to the people. Bring them together at Sundance to talk about the threats of climate change. And when the nations of the world gather in Paris this year, they’re gonna be joined by those mayors and also business and civic leaders, all ready to make commitments to action now. And nothing less than the fate of our planet is hanging in the balance.
And the imperative for action should not be more clear. So, today we can no longer claim ignorance as an excuse for inaction, because it’s the overwhelming judgement of science that climate change is real and the result of human activity. And as Pope Francis has so eloquently pointed out, “Climate change is a moral imperative that transcends politics.”
We see the effects all around us from drought and famine in Africa. And heat waves in South Asia to wildfires across North America. Devastating hurricanes, tornadoes, crippling floods here in New York. The heat wave in India and Pakistan has already claimed more than 2,300 lives, making it one of the deadliest in history. And so everywhere we look moderate weather seems to be going extinct. All the years of the 21st century, so far, have ranked among the warmest on record. And as temperature rise, so do global instability, poverty, and conflict.
Now, the best scientists in the world tell us that we’ve already used up more than half of our remaining carbon budget. Now, an increase of just two degrees Celsius is all that separates our planet from becoming less habitable. Now that difference is barely perceptible to human skin, but two degrees is all it takes to turn an agricultural breadbasket into desert, and eliminate fresh water from a third of the world’s land surface by 2100. So, our window of opportunity is narrow. And the margin between success and catastrophic failure is, unfortunately, thin.
And the time for half measures and climate denial is over. Unless we move quickly, away from fossil fuels, we’re gonna destroy the air we breathe, the water we drink, the health of our children, grandchildren, and future generations. And if we’re gonna avoid the worst of the impacts, then we’ve just got to act boldly. And we must act immediately. Because we’re all responsible for this crisis.
And right now, citizens, communities, corporations and countries around the world, are stepping up to the challenge. So, that’s the good news. More than 500 cities have made that decision to create jobs, improve the quality of life, and reduce emissions by investing in clean energy. Last year, U.S. and China, the two largest emitters of greenhouse gas, agreed to historic carbon reductions. But look, no country can solve this crisis alone. We’ve all got to do more. We must be a movement that includes every single nation on earth, because climate change affects every nation on earth. So this December the world must unite behind a common goal. Because, look, this is it. This is our only planet. Our only life source. This may be our last chance.
Our planet resources are limited, but there’s no limit to the human imagination and our capacity to solve bigger problems. So, only by acting now, and standing together, behind a universal climate agreement, can we live up to the U.N.’s promise that was made years ago, its founding promise. And only by acting now and standing together can we achieve the results we need, in the time that we have left. And only by acting now and standing together can we begin to tip the scales and change the course of history.
When 193 countries take center stage in Paris this December, the citizens of the world are going be watching. And we’re going be looking to you to assume the leading role in combating change. And I, for one, hope you will embrace that role with courage and conviction. Thank you.
